The oldest city of the Third Children remaining, the City of Light, stands on what used to be the shore of the southern sea. When Cierdan, son of Doshi'ya, set sail in the first ship, the collection of fishing communities on the southern coast grew to an impressive port. The southern hearth-ember Doshi'ya set long ago served as a beacon, guiding ships in during dark nights and misty days. During the disaster of the Sundering, amid the earthquakes that shook the coastlines, the southern sea receded, leaving behind dry barren land. The seabed is now a desert where the People of the Desert dwell, bordered on one side by the Inland Sea, and on the other by the ocean. The shore where The City of Light of old stood is now a long, tall escarpment of stone, and against the sheer side of this escarpment The City of Light is built, on the edge of the desert.
The City of Light is the seat of power for the ruling princes, just as the Capital is for the court circles, and the City on the Lake is for the Firekindlers Guild. It is also rich in trade, and therefore the main base of the Trade Guild, partially because the great shipping road of the river links it to the commodities market in the City on the Lake, but also because of its proximity to the native desert of the People of the Desert. Additionally, the City of Light is the (very unofficial) heart of the Night Guild.
